The cake cutting is a symbolic tradition where the newlywed couple cuts the wedding cake together, often as a celebratory moment shared with guests. It symbolises unity, the first task the couple performs jointly as spouses. After cutting, the couple typically feeds each other a small piece as a gesture of love and commitment.
When to cut the wedding cake?
In most modern weddings, the cake is cut just before the first dance so everyone can watch before heading onto the dance floor.
Also, it can be done after the wedding breakfast, if you want to serve the cak as a dessert or with the tea and coffee at the end.
What is the superstition about wedding cakes? There is a sentiment and the superstition of good luck and prosperity that is believed to occur when couples enjoy a piece of their cake one year later.
Although after 3 months of freezing, the good taste and texture of the cake are not guaranteed, there is a popular tradition of freezing the top tier to enjoy at the 1st wedding anniversary. While the food safety guidelines are not to freeze anything more than three months, I wouldn’t do it personally.
What I suggest to my couples is to save the top tier and enjoy it together with their closest friends and family for breakfast the next morning after the big day. As very often, I get a feedback all the guests enjoyed the cake but the bride and groom didn't have a chance to try it!
Is it a bad luck not to freeze and eat the cake? Of course not! If you want to celebrate your wedding anniversary with a throwback to your wedding day, just ask your cake maker to recreate the wedding cake in a smaller version suitable for the occasion. Voila!
